Our day In Colmar

Today we had a very exciting day! We took a boat trip on the Rhine River. The Rhine serves as the border between France and Germany in the Alsace region. We also went to the Unterlinden museum which has the Isenheim Altarpiece. The Isenheim Altarpiece is an altarpiece painted by the German artist Matthias Grünewald in 1506-1515. This altar piece was painted for the Monastery of St. Anthony in Isenheim near Colmar, which specialized in hospital work. The Antonine monks of the monastery were noted for their treatment of sufferers of skin disease, such as ergotism, symptoms of which are displayed by figures including the crucified Christ in the altarpiece. – Margeaux Candlin

Mulhouse

Margeaux here-

We had a wonderful day today. We saw the Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut. This chapel was very uniquely disigned  and ” Ronchamp, the chapel of Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp (FrenchChapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut de Ronchamp), completed in 1955, is one of the finest examples of the architecture of Franco-Swiss architect Le Corbusier and one of the most important examples of twentieth-century religious architecture.(wikipedia)” This chapel was unlike any other that I have been to. Next we went to the zoo in Mulhouse. We saw an array of animals that looked happy in their environments. The goal of the zoo is to save endangered species.

Last day in Saverne

Hello everyone!

This morning we are going to the district conference in Besanson. We had  a wonderful time in Saverne. I visited the hospital’s pediatric urgent care. There I learned that the French people have a note book for their children that is updated at each doctor’s visit. This note book begins at the first doctor’s visits during pregnancy and continues until the child is 16. We visited the Marc Chagall stain glass exhibit in Sauberne which was beautiful! We  also visited the Mephisto shoe factory. We saw how the shoes were made, by hand , and learned about how meticulously each shoe is crafted.

Au revoir- Margeaux

Saverne

Margeaux here: Today we arrived in Saverne. This morning we saw a miniature train display in a rotary member’s basement. The details were incredible! Next we arrived at Haut Barr castle for a wonderful lunch. We had foi gras, scallops, and ice cream sundaes!! Haur Barr  is also nicknamed “Alsace’s eye”, because it offers a spectacular view over the Alsatian plain and the Vosges.  Saverne is situated on the Rhine-Marne canal We also took a wonderful tour of Saverne. Some things I learned today… In a church a statue of a dog is a symbol of faith. Children attend school in a castle that is 600 years old. Children in France do not go to school on Wednesdays but do attend school on Saturdays. Napolean tried to refurbish the Chateau-haut by saying that it was for the widows of Paris. These women did not want to leave Paris and come to Saverne so his plan did not work out.
